This was from a few years ago when Zac was on “Less Than Perfect”

For Zachary Levi, there has never been a backup plan.

For the 22-year-old actor and co-star of the ABC sitcom Less Than Perfect, acting was his calling; it was what he was supposed to do. After being cast in supporting roles in two NBC sitcom pilots (which weren’t picked up) and the TV movie Big Shot: Confessions of a Campus Bookie, Levi wasn’t satisfied. As a Christian in Hollywood, the most intensely competitive atmosphere in the entertainment world, he is constantly working to maintain both his positive attitude and his personal ministry in a jaded industry.

[RELEVANT magazine:] You were a mainstay in the Ojai Theater for several years doing The Outsiders, Godspell and other plays. What did you learn from live theater that is helping your career now?

[Zachary Levi:] Theater has been my entire training process because I never took any acting classes—any kind of conventional training. I learned everything that I know now from doing constant theater, working with different directors, writers and other actors. The actor that I am today would not exist had it not been for everyone that I’ve worked with before, God working within me, constantly keeping my eyes and my ears open to act as a sponge to soak that stuff up and then be able to spit it out when I needed to.

[RM:] Was your family involved in your acting at that point? How did they encourage you?

[ZL:] My family was always very supportive. Whether you’re an actor or not, everybody hears the horror stories of people going to L.A. and trying to be an actor, and their dreams are crushed, and they end up working for the IRS. So they were always protective to the point that they wanted me to have a backup plan, which is understandable, but there was always something inside of me that knew: backup plan, schmackup plan.

[RM:] Before Less Than Perfect you were a hard-working actor in Hollywood like a lot of people are today. What advice would you give others about going to audition after frustrating audition?

[ZL:] The first advice that I would give is to really spend time in prayer to make sure that this is exactly what God wants you to be doing and not just something that you really feel like you should be doing. Many times I have come home from a really devastating audition, and I’d be really thoroughly depressed because it was a role that I really was hoping for. I realized how crucial having a walk with God was because I could turn around and say, “It didn’t happen, but obviously it wasn’t God’s will.” People who don’t have God in their lives only have themselves to blame. So they look back at the audition and they say, “I didn’t do a good enough job.” But so often it has nothing to do with how good you did in the audition; it has to do with the fact that you’re a brunette and they were looking for a blonde. So, to me, the most important factor in all of the rejection was that I had a walk with God. As far as being an actor is concerned, you have to have passion. If you’re not bringing the passion of the character into the room with you, you might as well not come into the room at all.

[RM:] Now you’re part of one of the hottest casts in TV, and you’re playing the role of the archenemy. How have the last few months been for you?

[ZL:] It has been really crazy. You get free stuff; you get to be in the newspaper, in magazine articles and on television shows. It’s weird. To me, it hasn’t all completely sunk in yet. But at the same, I hope it never does. I hope it never completely sinks in. I hope there’s always at least a small part of me that’s always surprised, always taken aback, always childlike or innocent in the whole process.

[RM:] Is it hard to maintain that innocence in this environment?

[ZL:] Overall, as a human beings its hard to maintain that innocence. Even now sometimes I’ll find myself in a situation, and I’ll think to myself—and not in a really negative way but—“I wonder if they know who I am.” And not like, “Don’t you know who I am?” like I’m this huge guy, but I wonder if they know if that I am this guy on this TV show, more out of curiosity than anything else. But the problem is that the curiosity, in an instant, can turn into conceitedness. To me that’s what makes putting on the full armor of God everyday so important. Even saying that right now I feel like such a hypocrite, because reading your Bible and really spending alone time in prayer with the Lord every day, I stumble in that.

[RM:] Is Hollywood a difficult atmosphere to be in as a Christian?

[ZL:] Absolutely. The atmosphere in Hollywood in general is very anti-conservative, very anti-Christian. The liberal segment of Hollywood, which is 80 percent of it if not more, they look at Christians as hypocrites that are false and fake. The tough part is that in many cases I can’t argue with them. My job on my set, I believe, is to first just love people and gain that trust with people where they know that I really do love them and care about their well-being, so that when they are running into problems, they will hopefully, at some point, come to me and ask me, “What is your peace all about? What is your comfort all about? Where do you get your love? Where do you get your talents? And I can turn to them and say without blinking, “Jesus Christ.”
You can’t just come out there and say “Hey, I’m a Christian, and I’m gonna beat you into thinking the way that I do.” You can’t do that. It’s not about manipulation so much as it’s about getting in on someone’s life on the ground floor. So more than anything, that’s what I’m trying to do now. Just build relationships with everyone that I work with.

Its so wonderful to hear about more Christians in the entertainment industry. I am in the business in Colorado and it has been so encouraging to meet Christians on set. And Zach is so right about showing people love and that light radiates to others so they want to know what makes us that way and that is welcome opening to tell them about our faith and how it has changed our lives and our personal relationship with Christ is truly the only thing that keeps us going.

This makes me love Zachary Levi and Chuck even more… I need Jesus more in my life, more than He is now. This encourages and I’m glad I found it.

  3. Eileen says:

Wow! I had the biggest Crush on Zach for hte longest time sense he started in Chuck. I have been a Christian for 3 1/2 years and I had not clue he was Christian. Thats amazing! I am sooo giong to start watching Chuck and buy all of the seasons and support him! This is awesome!

  4. Zacfan says:

I really wish I could believe in a God. Sadly I don’t seem to have the type of mind to, I just can’t see it being true. I would have to suspend my logical way of thinking and I just can’t.
But I love zac and I love that he’s a committed Christian, because I can see that it is a big reason for him being the wonderful caring guy that he is. Not that I think you can’t be a decent guy and an atheist.
I really really hope that he keeps his faith and never lets fickle Hollywood change that.

    zacfan,
i’m glad that you are an open-minded atheist, and i hope that never changes. i could be called an atheist, but i choose an antiquated term, “freethinker,” as i regard the other term too contextualized around theism to define how i see the world. no matter what you call yourself, i’m happy see equal expression of kindness and compassion among all people here–why can’t the rest of the internet be this way?

I am so excited to hear that Zachary Levi is a Christian!!!! I have loved watching Chuck from the very beginning and it makes it so much better to hear that Zachary Levi is a Christian. It is very encouraging to me as an actor to know that Christians can make it in Hollywood and still keep their faith. Thank you for being such a great example for us all!

This is so awesome! I have watched two seasons of Chuck, and I freakin’ love it. I love the geekiness with a dash of coolness of Chuck. Also, I’ve seen such descency in his acts (even if it’s only acting). I realized that you can be cool, but still be descent. Then I found out in this website that Zachary is a Christian. Wow! I am so much encouraged after knowing this! It’s so hard to daily live your life, standing for and obeying God’s Word. Yet here is a guy, living it for Jesus, even if the world is against his flow. I truly salute you sir! I will keep you in my prayers, and may the Lord bless the work of thy hands.

Wow, I am really proud at the responses on this. No one smashing each other for religion or anything. This was a top google article too. This makes me proud of the world. If the world were like this haha who knows.

ANYWAY!!! Zachary Levi is the man. This article makes me liek him like tenfold. GO CHUCK!

  9. yanangski says:

i knew it! Zach is a Christian!!! it shows man, great job. :)

  10. RD says:

This is a real testament to the work God can do in a person’s life as long as they keep turning to him. It is encouraging to see someone able to keep the faith and continue their walk with God even when they are surrounded by opposing and critical opinions.

I struggle every day to keep with the faith and keep turning to God, even when every fiber of my being wants nothing more than to control my own life. Thank you, Zac, for being willing to openly express your faith :)

  11. Eowyn says:

“backup plan, schmackup plan”… sounds so Zach/Chuck.

  12. JW/69 says:

What?!?! I was shocked after reading all these comments. I literally cannot believe this, a place where someone mentions Christianity & doesn’t get flamed to the bone by a bunch of ignorant atheists. I am very proud of all you people getting along even though you don’t share the same beliefs. I have been saved by the way just to make my statement more clear

    cub Reply:

mmm…okay, but you kinda just flamed the atheists a li’l bit there, pal….

    Paige Reply:

I think they might have meant that if an athiest did come and “flame” everyone then they would be ignorant.

I loved how Zach explained it. I am christian who hates it when we are painted as these horrible nasty people who condemn everything and everyone. I believe you are to show God’s love to everyone, no matter what. And like Zach said, when they ask then you tell them.

  13. Grace says:

I don’t think it’s a matter of someone mentioning Christianity and getting flamed by a lurking squad of atheists (we don’t send out teams). It’s all in the manner of delivery.

Zach sounds like a chill, comfortable, confident Christian — the sort who has their beliefs, and will discuss their religion, but has room for other schools of thought in the world. Speaking as an atheist, his approach is exactly the sort I enjoy in Christian friends. On the flip side of Christian profession, it becomes quite difficult to be friends with someone who’s constantly implying that you’re backward and wrong and ignorant.

It’s the projection that gets a little hard to take sometimes. And the vocabulary, I think, which is more a problem of semantics — certain terms mean one thing in the Christian world and carry a very different weight in the atheist world.

Either way, Zach sounds like he’s struck just the right balance. Good for him, and I think he sounds like a very likeable, reasonable person to people of all faiths.

  14. David says:

I am a Jewish Conservative and I want to join everyone in applauding Zachary Levi for his faith, and feeling comfortable about who he is, despite how so much of Hollywood is run by the far left likes of Sean Penn, Rosie O’Donnell, George Clooney and Michael Moore.

I recently watched the hysterical movie from 2008, “An American Carol”, a comedy made by for and starring Hollywood Conservatives, including the likes of Kelsey Grammer, Jon Voigt, James Woods and Dennis Hopper. Also appearing in a very small role in the movie was Zachary Levi. I immediatetly google’d Zachary and came across this website and was pleased to find out Zach wasn’t just another America-hating, Hollywood leftist elite.

I was already a die hard “Chuck” fan and now I am an even bigger “Chuck” fan. Way to go Zach and continue to be who you are. There are plenty of us of different faiths who admire you as well!

  15. Molly says:

I just want to say that my brothers introduced me to Chuck, and I was skeptical at first. I grew to really love the show. Then my brother said, “You know the guy that plays Chuck… Zach Levi? He’s a Christian.” I said… “No way.”
I totally didn’t believe him. Seeing his responses to this interview has shown me his faith is more than a hollow boast.
It is very encouraging to see someone in Hollywood who is grounded on the solid rock of Christ. Like Zach said, the real way to tell people about Christ is through your actions. There is no better way to explain to people how much they need HIM than to show them how much HE has changed your life.

ZL – keep it up. May God use you powerfully in the lives of your coworkers and fellow actors/actresses.

  16. Carol Anne Stark says:

I just started watching Chuck and thought it was really cute and relatively clean. I don’t usually watch network TV sitcoms because most of them are so crude. It is so refreshing to know that Zach Levi is a Christian, though, and acts in a decent series. I know he is part of a slim minority in Hollywood. Maybe his success will be an encouragement to other Christians who would like to be in show business but are turned off by the left wing politics and values. I wish Zach the best and think it would be so great if he wrote a book about his experiences in show business…something that would inspire others to want to know Christ and want to live a Godly life.

  17. Martin Horton says:

I just want to say thank you so much Zach for doing this interview. 7 yrs ago I was hugely in debt, not very happy, chasing money & success & living life my own way. Then in 2003 I surrended my life to Jesus and now I’m finally doing what I always wanted to do which is become a professional actor ! It’s so amazing how he has worked in my life over these past 7 yrs ! As one of my closest friends says ‘The Lord really does restore broken lives and turn them into something beautiful.’ So often I mess up and slide back into my old ways which is why it is so helpful and such a blessing reading your interview. Thanks again, may God bless you and use you to bless many others, and hey if you get a chance plse pray for me as I start out in my career, I’d be so greatful! God bless from ya bro in Christ. Martin

  18. Annie says:

I just recently started watching Chuck in season 3. I had to go back and download all of seasons 1 & 2 because I fell in love with the show. Zach is great actor who does that perfect blend of nerdy heroism (I don’t even know how those two aspects can go together, but they do) in the form of his character. Zach seems like a funny and genuine guy in person. However, the best thing to learn about my new favorite actor is that he is a strong Christian. I pray that the Lord continues to bless his career and his life, and that he continues to keep his faith strong.

  19. levi says:
